Taurine, The Universal Detoxifier

taurineTaurine has been a relatively uncommon supplement  in the health and wellness world. However, Taurine is an important amino acid that helps detoxify the body and assists the processes involved in your metabolism, nervous system, brain and visual pathways.

Dr Staninger has referred to Taurine as a “universal detoxifier”. It helps activate and catalyze the necessary processes for our body to flush toxins properly.

Taurine helps stabilize cell membranes by allowing the passage of sodium and potassium ions in and out of the cells in your body.

It is a naturally occurring amino acid and part of our bile that is found in the lower intestine. Cysteine, methionine and Vitamin E is needed to synthesize Taurine. Taurine is found in animal protein and although the adult human body naturally produces the amino acid, vegetarians may suffer from a deficiency. (3 squirts of Braggs a day can help the amino acids to stay!)

Taurine is essential for the proper functioning of the skeletal muscles, nervous system and cardiac function.

The bodybuilding community is giving Taurine a lot of attention lately as a supplement to help recover quicker from their intense weight training program.

It is important in the development and maintenance of healthy eyesight. It is effective in helping control high blood pressure. Taurine is also useful in removing fatty deposits in the liver. It is beneficial in removing excess fluid retention, especially in women during their menstrual periods.

Just like so many other vital nutrients needed for a healthy body, Taurine needs the proper balance of many other supplements or we can experience a deficiency.

Taurine deficiency can occur for a number of reasons and may cause serious problems with your body; including depression, hypertension, kidney problems, impaired vision, weight gain, and anxiety.

One indicator of Taurine deficiency is night-blindness.

One of the most common causes of Taurine deficiency is when your body is not making enough of the amino acid. This is likely because your body is already experiencing a deficiency in other essential products needed to produce Taurine. Deficiencies in vitamin A, zinc, vitamin B6 and the amino acids methionine and cysteine can cause the problem of not making enough Taurine.

Certain bacteria, especially anaerobic bacteria, can interrupt the Taurine creation process. These disease-causing organisms can interrupt the bile production process, which in turn degrades the Taurine that is produced.

Ingesting too much monosodium glutamate (MSG) can also cause a Taurine deficiency. This popular food additive, has been re-named and now shows up in many of our food products, has degrading effects on Taurine in the body. Even though the popularity of MSG has decreased as more information surfaces about the harmful effects of the additive, go here to learn the names that you may find on your food labels at home:  http://www.msgmyth.com/hidename.htm

Back to the idea of Taurine as a detoxifier, my point is to raise the awareness of the value of Taurine for our overall health. I do not want to give the impression that if you take Taurine you will not have any toxic issues.

The most important thing to remember about exposure to any kind of toxin within our environment is that it must be actively targeted with the correct detox products, binders, and chelators in order for our body to release the build up that has occurred. These poisons will not just go away on their own.
