It has come to my attention that my daughter is very sensitive to Mono-Sodium Glutamate (MSG). I identified this as one of main the reasons behind her headaches because they were always obvious to track when they were severe. I have personally been a label reader for most of my life so MSG in any large quantity or obvious name has not been in the cupboards for many years.
However, I saw the pattern emerge as she got older and began to go to birthday parties or other special invites where she spent the day eating outside of my protected menu.
Every single time she did this, she came home with a raging headache and completely wiped out. It was more than the usual wipe out from too much sugar or fun- it was more like migraine forces…one day she described it as a headache where it felt like a really strong man was pushing a brick down on her head.
I have since had her tested with ARS (Advanced Resonance Analysis) to get a picture of her overall exposure and toxic build ups and am shocked to find out that she is also very high in Mercury, advanced nano materials, bacteria, molds…all of which are major multiplying factors to her lack of vitality to deal with the culprit of MSG.
I want to stay on track with what I have learned about MSG just in the last hour researching for this post, so here goes…
Mono-Sodium Glutamate is an ingredient that came from the manufacturing industry processing our foods. In its natural form of Glutamic acid, it is just one of many amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins. The body has no trouble breaking down and dealing with this form of it. However, in the factory it is broken down or made “free” by various processes (hydrolyzed, autolyzed, modified or fermented with strong chemicals, bacteria, or enzymes) and refined to a white crystal that resembles sugar.
When MSG got a bad wrap years ago and most of the media reported that MSG was off the market, this simply was not true and is very much like what has just happened in the aspartame industry. It has just been re-named.
This is the point being made in this post…
Labels are misleading because labels are simply re-written; the names have been changed to protect the product’s future. To really be an educated shopper today, you have to read past the bright shining parts of the label that are purely for getting your attention, and in the case of MSG…you have to have a cheat sheet in your pocket or purse to refer to when looking at the fine print.
The following substances contain the highest percentage of factory created free glutamate, with MSG containing 78% and are very commonly listed on most processed foods products like crackers, cereals, box dinners…basically anything that can live on a shelf and is less than alive with flavor.
I have had this list in my purse for awhile:
MSG, Gelatin, Calcium Caseinate, Monosodium glutamate, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), Textured Protein, Monopotassium glutamate, Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP), Yeast Extract, Glutamate, Autolyzed Plant Protein, Yeast food or nutrient, Glutamic Acid, Sodium Caseinate, Autolyzed Yeast, Vegetable Protein Extract, Senomyx (wheat extract labeled as artificial flavor).
This is the list I just found and is rather disturbing for some of the ingredients named:
Carrageenan, Wheat, rice, corn, or oat protein, Protein Fortified Milk, Whey Protein or Whey, Anything enriched or vitamin enriched, Annatto, Whey Protein Isolate or Concentrate, Protein fortified “anything”, Spice, Pectin, Enzyme modified proteins, Gums (guar and vegetable), Protease, Ultra-pasteurized dairy products, Dough Conditioners, Malted Barley (flavor), Natural Flavors, Flavors, Flavoring, Modified food starch, Barley malt, Reaction Flavors, Rice syrup or brown rice syrup, Malt Extract or Flavoring, Maltodextrin, dextrose, dextrates, Soy Sauce or Extract, “Low” or “No Fat” items, Caramel Flavoring (coloring), Soy Protein, Corn syrup and corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup, Stock, Soy Protein Isolate or Concentrate, Citric Acid (when processed from corn), Malt Extract or Flavoring, Natural Chicken, Beef, or Pork, Flavoring “Seasonings” (Most assume this means salt, pepper, or spices and herbs, which sometimes it is.) Lipolyzed butter fat, Protease enzymes, Fermented proteins, Yeast Nutrients, Lecithin, Gluten and gluten flour, Protein powders: whey, soy, oat, rice (as in protein bars shakes and body building drinks), Amino acids (as in Bragg’s liquid amino acids and chelated to vitamins), Algae, phytoplankton, sea vegetable, wheat/ barley grass powders, Stock, Soy Protein Isolate or Concentrate, Citric Acid (when processed from corn), Broth, Cornstarch fructose (made from corn), Milk Powder, Bouillon, Flowing Agents, Dry Milk Solids.
Armed with this new list, I found that even the high priced snack products I buy at an organic grocer is still potentially harmful and contains MSG. Hopefully in smaller quantities than the Kraft and General Mills brands; however, add to this list of re-named MSG products the fact that a company like Kashi is now owned by Kraft – and well – now what?!
This is where the answer is to turn to solutions that are safe, immediately effective, and empowering for all.
